The Truth Behind the Glow: Why I Chose Swedish Rapeseed Wax Over Paraffin and Soy
Dela
I have always loved candles. There has always been something deeply emotional about lighting a candle at the end of the day — the soft flicker reflecting against the walls, the warmth slowly filling the room, the feeling that the world suddenly becomes quieter and softer for a moment. Candles became part of my daily rituals long before I ever imagined creating my own brand. I would light one while making tea in the evening, while journaling, while cleaning the home, or simply while sitting still after a long day. To me, candles were never just decoration. They represented comfort, calmness, femininity, warmth, and the art of slowing down. But the more I surrounded myself with them, the more I began asking myself an uncomfortable question: What exactly am I burning inside my home? That question stayed with me for a long time, and once I started researching the candle industry, I realized I could never look at candles the same way again.
When I began building my own candle collection,I knew immediately that I did not want to create products simply because they looked beautiful online. I wanted every candle to feel deeply intentional. I wanted to know where the ingredients came from, how they affected the environment, how they affected the home, and whether they truly aligned with the slower, softer lifestyle I wanted my brand to represent. What shocked me most during my research was discovering how many candles are still made from paraffin wax — a petroleum byproduct created during the oil refining process. Something that is marketed as cozy and calming is, in reality, connected to the fossil fuel industry. Learning that paraffin candles can release substances like benzene and toluene into the air completely changed my perspective. I realized that if I was creating non toxic candles meant to support wellbeing and comfort, I could not ignore what was happening when that candle was actually burning in someone’s home.
Like many people searching for a more natural option, I initially believed soy wax was the obvious solution. Soy candles are often marketed as eco friendly candles and presented as the cleaner alternative to paraffin. But the deeper I researched soy production, the more conflicted I became. I learned that global soy farming is one of the major drivers behind deforestation in sensitive ecosystems, especially in South America. Massive areas of land are cleared to meet global demand, damaging biodiversity and disrupting natural habitats. Beyond that, soy simply is not local to Sweden. It often travels thousands of kilometers before reaching European candle makers, and I could not reconcile that with the vision I had for my brand. I wanted to build sustainable candles rooted in Nordic living, local production, and thoughtful craftsmanship. Shipping wax across oceans felt disconnected from that vision. I also discovered that much conventional soy farming relies heavily on industrial agriculture and pesticides, which raised even more questions for me. At some point, I realized I was searching globally for an answer that might already exist much closer to home.
Soy Wax vs Rapeseed Wax: The Sustainability Difference
Every spring in southern Sweden, the landscape transforms into endless golden rapeseed fields. If you have ever driven through Skåne during rapeseed season, you know exactly what I mean — the fields almost glow under the sunlight, creating this soft yellow warmth that feels both calming and energizing at the same time. To me, those fields represent the beauty of Nordic spring itself. They feel nostalgic, grounding, and deeply connected to Swedish nature. One day, while thinking about my brand and the kind of sustainable luxury products I wanted to create, it suddenly clicked. Why was I looking internationally for candle wax when something beautiful, local, and sustainable was already growing around us? That was the moment I discovered rapeseed wax, and honestly, everything changed from there.
The more I learned about rapeseed wax, the more convinced I became that it was exactly what I had been searching for. Unlike imported soy, rapeseed can be sourced much closer to home, drastically reducing transportation distances and lowering the overall carbon footprint. Supporting European and Swedish agriculture also felt incredibly important to me because it means supporting local farmers, local production, and more responsible supply chains. But beyond the environmental aspect, I fell in love with the qualities rapeseed wax brings to a candle. Rapeseed wax burns beautifully, creates clean burning candles with very little soot compared to paraffin candles, and holds fragrance naturally without needing heavy chemical additives. There is something incredibly soft and gentle about the way it burns. It felt perfectly aligned with the feeling I wanted our Scandinavian candles to create — calmness without overwhelming the senses, warmth without heaviness, luxury without excess.
Why Rapeseed Wax Plays an Important Role in Sustainable Candles
Another reason I deeply connected with rapeseed wax is the role rapeseed fields play within sustainable farming systems. Rapeseed is considered an important break crop that helps improve soil health and supports biodiversity. During flowering season, the bright yellow fields provide valuable nectar for bees and pollinators, bringing life and movement into the landscape. Knowing that rapeseed wax could become part of our candle-making philosophy made the entire process feel far more meaningful to me. Sustainability, to me, is not about following trends or using marketing buzzwords. It is about creating eco friendly candles with thoughtfulness from beginning to end — products that feel aligned with nature instead of disconnected from it.
For me, choosing rapeseed wax was never about chasing trends. It was about creating candles inspired by Nordic nature, local craftsmanship, and slower living. I wanted our candles to feel warm, calming, and intentional — something that could transform ordinary evenings into meaningful rituals. Every ingredient we choose is carefully considered, and rapeseed wax became one of the most important parts of that journey because it reflected everything I wanted the brand to stand for: softness, sustainability, simplicity, and honest beauty.
At the same time, I also became frustrated with the way natural candles and sustainable home products are often priced in a way that makes them feel inaccessible. I understand that high-quality ingredients and local production come with higher costs, but I never wanted my brand to become something overly exclusive or disconnected from real life. My philosophy has always been centered around transparent value. I would rather invest directly into better ingredients, better craftsmanship, and local sourcing than spend huge amounts on flashy campaigns, excessive packaging, or inflated branding. We do not believe in unnecessary markups designed purely for image. Instead, every krona goes into the actual product itself — into carefully selected waxes, organic cotton wicks, hand-poured production, and thoughtful small-batch craftsmanship. To me, that is what sustainable luxury should look like: honest, beautiful, intentional, and accessible enough to become part of everyday rituals rather than something saved only for special occasions.
Creating paraffin free candles became one of the most important values behind our brand because I wanted people to feel good about what they were bringing into their homes. A candle should not only smell beautiful — it should feel comforting, thoughtful, and connected to a softer way of living. Our goal was never simply to create another candle. We wanted to create clean burning candles that support slower living, cozy evening rituals, and mindful moments at home.
I also wanted our candles to continue existing beyond the final burn. The amber glass jar is intentionally designed to be reusable and travel-friendly, becoming part of a more circular lifestyle rather than something disposable. Once the candle is finished, the jar can easily be cleaned and reused for tea, jewelry, spices, hair accessories, cotton pads, or small everyday treasures around the home. I love the idea that these jars continue living quietly in people’s spaces long after the flame goes out. It reflects the slower, more intentional relationship with consumption that I hope our brand encourages.
For me, these candles are about so much more than fragrance. They represent everything I want this brand to stand for: slower living, thoughtful design, local craftsmanship, honest ingredients, sustainability without greenwashing, and the beauty of creating comforting rituals in everyday life. Every time I light one, I am reminded of those glowing rapeseed fields in southern Sweden and the quiet warmth they carry. My hope is that when someone lights one of our Scandinavian candles in their own home, they feel a little piece of that same softness — a calm glow that transforms ordinary moments into something comforting, grounding, and beautiful.
