Full Coverage Silk Eye Masks|Shutting Out the Grey Autumn Rain for a Sensory Reset
Dele
November in Sweden has a particular kind of grey. It isn't dramatic. It's a flat, wet, low sky that never quite gets light in the morning and never quite gets dark in the afternoon. The rain doesn't fall so much as hang around.
You'd think that would make sleeping easy. In my experience, it does the opposite. The streetlamp outside is still on at seven. A neighbour's hall light comes on at five. The phone lights up on the nightstand. Your eyes are closed, but the room never quite goes dark.
I started wearing a sleep mask years ago, in hotel rooms, on long flights and in whatever bedroom the week had put me in. I've tried many. Most of them annoyed me within a week. So when I designed my own, I started from a short list of things I couldn't stand. This post is about what I changed, and about why I think a full coverage silk eye mask is one of the nicest small things you can add to an autumn evening.
Why a mask feels different in autumn
In summer, light is the obvious problem. It comes in at four in the morning and you want it gone. In autumn, the problem is quieter. Rain, early dark and long evenings mean you spend more time indoors, in artificial light, looking at screens. By bedtime your eyes have had a long day.
A mask does something simple. It gives you a clear boundary: the day is over, the light is off, and you're not going to look at anything else. That's a small thing, but it's the kind of small thing a ritual is made of. Put it on, lie down, and let the room go dark, even if it isn't.
It's also very practical. If you share a room, travel a lot, work shifts, or live somewhere with streetlights outside the window, a mask lets you control the light in the one place you can: right in front of your eyes.
What I couldn't stand about most sleep masks
Here's my list. You may recognise it.
Pressure on the eyes. Many masks are made with a stiff foam pad, or they're pulled so tight that you can feel them pressing on your eyelids. Some people like that. I didn't. If I'm aware of the mask, it isn't doing its job.
The Velcro. This is the one that really bothered me. A hook-and-loop fastener at the back of the head catches hair. It tangles, pulls and sometimes gets stuck, and you wake up with a knot at the back of your head. If you have long or fine hair, it's miserable.
Thin fabric. A lot of "silk" masks use very light fabric that lets light through and starts to look tired after a few months.
Foam or polyester filling. It can be too hot, it flattens, and it doesn't feel like anything natural against your face.
Seams that fall apart. A mask you wear every night for years has to be properly made, or it will be in the bin by spring.
What's different about ours
I wanted a mask that I'd actually keep using, night after night. So here's what we did.
Heavyweight 30 momme silk
The outside is 30 momme mulberry silk. Momme is a measure of the weight and density of silk fabric. Thinner silks are often 16 to 22 momme. 30 momme is heavyweight: denser, more durable, and less see-through. It holds its shape and it feels substantial in your hands. That matters for light-blocking, and it matters for how long it lasts.
100% silk filling
Inside, the mask is filled with 100% mulberry silk. Not foam, not polyester wadding. The silk filling gives the mask a soft, even body, so it rests lightly on your face rather than pressing into it. It also feels cooler and more natural than synthetic padding. And because it's silk all the way through, you get that same smooth, quiet feel from the outside to the inside.
Full coverage, no pressure on the eyes
The mask is cut for full coverage across the eyes and brow, and it's designed to block light. But coverage doesn't mean pressure. There's no hard cup and no stiff foam block. The silk filling gives it softness rather than a pushed-in shape, so your eyelids are free to rest.
One piece, pull on and go
The whole mask is made as one piece. There's no strap to adjust and no separate pads to slip out of place. You pull it on over your head, and it sits where it should. A 6 cm wide elastic band holds it in place. The wide band spreads its grip over a larger area, so it stays put without you having to pull it tight.
A hand-finished closure, and no Velcro
The closure is finished by hand. And there's no Velcro anywhere on it. That means nothing to catch your hair, nothing to scratch, and no tangles at the back of your head in the morning. It's a small detail, but if you've ever been woken up by a mask pulling your hair, you know it isn't small.
Does a good mask help you sleep?
I want to be careful here. A sleep mask isn't a treatment, and I'm not going to claim it will fix anyone's sleep. What it does is simple and practical: it blocks light from reaching your eyes. For many people, that removes one common thing that disturbs sleep, especially in a room with streetlights, early sunrise or a partner who reads late.
Beyond that, I think the quality matters because of how you use it. A mask you hate wearing will end up in a drawer. A mask that's comfortable, doesn't press, doesn't pull your hair and doesn't fall apart is one you'll wear every night, and a habit you keep is worth more than a perfect product you don't use.
If you're having trouble sleeping regularly, it's worth talking to your doctor. A mask can be part of a good evening routine, but it isn't a substitute for advice.
Built for long use
I think about how a product ages. A mask is worn every night, rubbed against pillows, packed in suitcases and washed by hand. So we made it to last:
- Heavyweight silk doesn't wear thin as quickly as light silk.
- Silk filling doesn't flatten into a hard, sweaty pad the way some foam and polyester fillings can.
- A wide 6 cm elastic band spreads the grip over a larger area.
- Hand-finished closure means someone has looked at the part that gets the most stress.
- No Velcro means no fastener that gets clogged with hair and stops working.
I can't promise how long any individual mask will last, because that depends on how you care for it. But it's designed for years of use, not months.
An honest note about where it's made
Our silk eye mask is made in China, to our own specification, in genuine 30 momme mulberry silk. The candles, heatless curlers, eye pillows, aroma sachets, pearl jewelry and botanical infusions are made in Sweden. I'd rather tell you that plainly than let you assume.
How to care for it
Silk is more robust than people think, as long as you're gentle.
- Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent. No bleach.
- Press out the water. Don't wring it.
- Lay it flat to dry, away from direct sun and heat.
- Don't tumble dry.
Wash it every week or two, depending on how you use it. If you wear face cream at night, you might want to wash it a little more often.
A grey-day sensory reset
Here's how I use it on the greyest evenings. It's just a few small steps, nothing elaborate.
Early evening: Light a candle. I use a hand-poured beeswax and rapeseed wax candle, but any soft, low light will do.
An hour before bed: Put the screen away. Make a warm, caffeine-free botanical infusion and sit down with it.
Ten minutes before sleep: Lie down with the eye pillow, if you have one. Let your shoulders drop.
Lights out: Blow out the candle. Put on the mask. Listen to the rain, if there is any.
The rain was never the problem. It's actually a nice sound. The problem was the light, and the sense that the day never fully ended. A full coverage silk mask draws a line under it.
The bottom line
A good sleep mask is a small thing, but small things are what evenings are made of. Mine is full coverage, silk all the way through, one piece, with no pressure on the eyes and no Velcro to catch my hair. It's made for people who want a quieter, darker end to the day, and who'd rather buy one good thing than a drawer full of cheap ones.
If the grey rain is getting to you, try shutting it out. You may find you don't miss it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a full coverage silk eye mask? It's a sleep mask cut to cover the whole eye area, made from heavyweight silk, in our case 30 momme mulberry silk, with a silk filling. It's denser, softer and more durable than a mask made from thin silk or synthetic satin.
What does 30 momme mean? Momme measures the weight and density of silk fabric. 30 momme is considered heavyweight. It's denser, more durable and less see-through than the 12 to 19 momme silk used in many lighter products.
Why is silk filling better than foam? We think it feels softer and more natural against the skin, and it doesn't give you the hard, pressed feeling of a foam pad. Silk filling also tends to be cooler than polyester wadding. It's a matter of comfort rather than a medical benefit.
Does a full coverage mask block all light? It's designed for full coverage and made from dense 30 momme silk to block as much light as possible. How completely it works for you depends on how it fits your face and how bright the room is.
Will it put pressure on my eyes? It's designed not to. There's no hard cup or stiff foam, and the silk filling gives it soft body. The wide elastic band holds it in place without needing to be tight.
How does it stay on? It's one piece that you pull on over your head, held by a 6 cm wide elastic band. There's nothing to fasten or adjust.
Why no Velcro? Hook-and-loop fasteners catch hair, which can cause tangles and pulling. We chose a one-piece pull-on design with a hand-finished closure and no Velcro, so there's nothing to snag.
Can I wear it every night? Yes. It's designed for nightly use. Wash it regularly and let it dry flat.
How do I wash it? Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, press out the water and lay it flat to dry. Skip the dryer and direct sun.
Is it good for sensitive skin? Silk is smooth and doesn't absorb moisture from the skin the way cotton does. If you have a specific skin condition, check with your doctor before trying any new product.
Will a sleep mask fix my sleep? No. A mask blocks light and can be part of a calm evening routine. It's not a treatment. If you often struggle to sleep, talk to your doctor.
Where is it made? In China, to our own specification, in 30 momme mulberry silk.
