Amber: Five Botanicals for the Turn of the Season

There's a specific kind of tiredness that shows up when the light starts changing — shorter days, colder mornings, the sense that summer's ease is quietly packing up. I didn't want a blend that tried to fight that shift. I wanted one that matched it: warmer in color, a little deeper in flavor, built for the part of the year when you're reaching for something to hold onto in both hands.

That's Amber. Same principle as everything else we make — real botanicals, nothing sprayed on, nothing added to fake a color or a flavor that isn't already there.

What's In It, and Why Each One Is There

Aronia berry is native to eastern North America and carries one of the highest anthocyanin concentrations of any commonly used fruit — the same pigment family responsible for its deep, almost-black color. It's genuinely one of the most antioxidant-dense fruits used in herbal blends, and it's doing a lot of the color work here.

Goji berry has centuries of history in Chinese herbal tradition, where it's long been valued as an everyday ingredient rather than an occasional treat. Nutritionally, goji berries are notable for their zeaxanthin content — among the highest of any commonly eaten fruit — alongside a natural sweetness that needs no added sugar to come through.

Apple pieces round out the blend with a fuller, more rounded fruit character. Apple's tartness comes primarily from malic acid, a different compound from the acids found in the other fruits here, which is part of why it adds body without simply intensifying the tartness elsewhere in the cup.

White mulberry brings a rich, honeyed sweetness, long used in Chinese herbal tradition for exactly that quality. It also carries rutin, a naturally occurring polyphenol also found in foods like buckwheat, and it plays a real balancing role here — softening the sharper tartness from the hibiscus and aronia.

Hibiscus contributes color and a light, tart accent rather than being the dominant note in this particular blend. Its tartness comes from a distinctive profile of organic acids, including a compound literally named hibiscus acid, and it adds a bright edge that keeps the deeper, sweeter fruits from feeling heavy.

Why These Five, Together

Aronia and hibiscus bring depth of color and tartness; goji and white mulberry bring natural sweetness and roundness; apple ties the two ends together. None of this is an accident of "throw fruit in a bag" — each ingredient is doing a specific job, the same philosophy behind every blend we make.

No added sugar, no natural or artificial flavoring, nothing concentrated and sprayed back onto the mix to boost a taste that isn't already there. What's in the sachet is what ends up in your cup.

A Small Ritual for the Turn of the Season

I didn't build Amber to fix the feeling of the year turning. I built it because that feeling deserves its own small ritual — the same warm cup, the same few minutes, repeated often enough that it becomes something your body reaches for as the light changes, the way the rest of this brand has always worked. Not a dramatic reset. Just something steady, held in both hands, while the season does what it's going to do anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Amber caffeine-free? Yes, entirely. There's no rooibos or tea leaf base in this blend — it's built purely from fruit and botanicals, so it's naturally caffeine-free rather than decaffeinated.

Why is the color so deep? Primarily from aronia berry and hibiscus, both naturally rich in pigment — anthocyanins in the case of aronia, and a combination of anthocyanins and organic acids in hibiscus. There's no added coloring involved.

What gives this blend its sweetness if there's no added sugar? Goji berry and white mulberry both contribute genuine natural sweetness on their own, balanced against the tartness from aronia and hibiscus and rounded out by apple. Nothing is added to sweeten it artificially.

How is Amber different from Ruby? Ruby is hibiscus-forward and built for warm-weather brightness, served hot or cold. Amber leans into deeper, sweeter fruit — goji and white mulberry take the lead here rather than hibiscus — for a warmer, more grounding cup suited to shorter days.

What antioxidant compounds are actually in this blend? Several, each from a different ingredient: anthocyanins from aronia berry and hibiscus, zeaxanthin from goji berry, and rutin from white mulberry. These are naturally occurring plant compounds present in the ingredients themselves, not extracted separately and added back in.

Does Amber contain any added sugar or flavoring? No. Any sweetness comes from the goji berry, white mulberry, and apple themselves — nothing added to enhance or fake the flavor.

This is the blend from Beijing, Stockholm, Hong Kong, and every hotel room in between where I couldn't have told you what city I was in. It's still the first thing I make when I land anywhere.

What's In It

Each sachet holds 7.8g of concentrated botanical blend — enough for 3–4 cups at 400ml, so it's easy to prepare a full pot and share with whoever you're with. A caffeine-free rooibos base carries tart cherry, black mulberry, and goji berry — three of the most naturally melatonin- and tryptophan-rich botanicals there are. Aronia berry deepens the color and adds antioxidants, and a touch of chrysanthemum bud rounds it out with a light, honeyed floral note that helps quiet an overactive mind.

No valerian, no heavy lavender — just real fruit, and not sweet, since the rooibos base keeps it more earthy than sugary. Nothing here to build a dependency on.

Why It Works

This isn't a casual cup — it's a concentrated, intensive botanical regimen, built the way a proper herbal formula is built rather than a flavored drink. Tart cherry, mulberry, and goji don't sedate you — they gently nudge your body toward the sleep it's already trying to have. It's the same logic behind mulberry-and-goji pairings in Chinese herbal tradition: nourish the blood, cool the heat, let a racing mind settle on its own.

The color alone is worth the pour — a deep, quiet burgundy that blooms slowly as it steeps. It's the kind of infusion that feels like comfort after a long day, before you've even taken the first sip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this actually caffeine-free? Yes. The base is rooibos, which is naturally caffeine-free — not decaffeinated, just never had caffeine to begin with. You can drink it right before bed without it interfering with sleep the way black or green tea would.

Does it actually contain melatonin, or just ingredients that support it? It's the second one, and that's intentional. Tart cherry, black mulberry, and goji are naturally rich in melatonin and tryptophan as they occur in the fruit — this isn't a synthetic melatonin supplement measured in milligrams. It works with your body's own rhythm rather than overriding it with a concentrated dose.

Why isn't it sweet if it has all this fruit in it? The rooibos base is naturally earthy rather than sweet, and we haven't added any sugar or sweetener to mask that. The fruit brings depth of flavor and color more than sweetness. If you're expecting something closer to a fruit punch, this leans more toward a grounded, woody warmth instead.

How do I brew it, and how strong should it be? Steep the full 7.8g sachet in hot water (not quite boiling) for 6–8 minutes. Because each sachet is concentrated, it makes a full pot — 3–4 cups at 400ml — so it's easy to brew once and share, or portion it out across an evening.

Can I drink this every night, or should I cycle on and off? It's designed for nightly use. Because it works through naturally occurring compounds rather than a concentrated sedative, there's no dependency to build or tolerance to manage — it's meant to become a routine, not something to ration.

Is it safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding? We'd always recommend checking with your doctor before adding any new botanical blend during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, since individual ingredients like goji and chrysanthemum aren't universally recommended in every case.

How is this different from a regular sleep tea bag? Most tea bags hold around 2g of mostly filler leaf with a light flavoring. This is a 7.8 g concentrated blend of whole fruit, root, and flower — closer to an intensive botanical regimen than a flavored drink, which is also why one sachet makes multiple cups instead of one.
